Just when you thought you knew how you felt about high fructose corn syrup (most likely that you would rather have regular sugar instead), the makers of the ‘syrup’ are trying to change its name. In a clear effort to confuse consumers and draw their attention away from all the negative press about high fructose corn syrup, they’ve decided to rename it ‘corn sugar’.
According to the Corn Refiners Association, (who obviously benefits from the sale of HFCS) the new name will help people understand the sweetener. Of course, I can’t see what there is to understand or not understand. The sweetener is what it is and whether you call it high fructose corn syrup, corn sugar, or corn on the cob sugar, the negativity people feel about it will still remain.
Clearly, this is just an attempt to push a new, simpler name at consumers in an attempt to shed off the stigma that HFCS carries. Food manufacturers are moving away from HFCS and moving toward regular sugar because of a growing demand from consumers to use have more natural products in their foods.
I do believe that this will be an uphill battle for the Corn Refiners Association. Not only will they have to fool consumers into believing that ‘corn sugar’ is something different or better than HFCS, they will have to convince food manufacturers that consumers will fall for the hoax.
Well here’s my retaliation.
CORN SUGAR IS THE NEW NAME FOR HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP!
To be clear, I do personally believe that regular sugar is better for you than high fructose corn syrup, but I wont get into the why debate right now. My problem is this groups attempt to pull the rug over the eyes of consumers by changing the name of a product in a clear attempt to confuse consumers. Sales of high fructose corn syrup have been on a steady decline, and this move is an obvious attempt to fool consumers watchful eye.
For many people, not seeing an ingredient is just as important, if not more important than seeing one. This can lead to clear confusion about what is actually in a product. That is misleading, and dishonest.
The move to the new name is up to FDA approval, which can take up to 2 years, but you may already be seeing commercials and advertisements pushing the new ‘corn sugar’ name. If it were up to me, the decision would be a clear no. Of course I’m not the FDA, so it’s not up to me, but at the very least, if it is approved, I believe the FDA should have a mandatory requirement that all food manufacturers list the new ‘corn sugar’ name as ‘Corn Sugar (High Fructose Corn Syrup)’ for a minimum of 2 years to allow consumers to realize the name change. After all, it’s only fair to give consumers all the information they need to make an informed decision about a product, isn’t it?
