Earth Day is Tomorrow!

Get ready for Earth Day!

Tomorrow, April 22nd 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Celebrated around the world by more than 500,000,000 people, Earth Day is the largest non religious holiday celebrated worldwide.

So what can you do to help our Earth? Here are a few more tips to get you started and to help bring Earth Day in to your every day.

Carpool! Getting cars off the road not only saves you money, but it saves our planet from the emmisions of one more car. Doesn’t seem like a big deal? Well the more people that do it, the bigger it is. Think of the money you’ll save in gas too. A win win for everyone.

Put your computer in standy mode. Ok well not right this second, but after you read this, open up your control panel and check your power settings. Make sure your monitor and computer are set to automatically enter standy mode when you’re not using them. For your monitor I’d reccomend 10 minutes, and for your computer try 20 minutes.

Go out and buy yourself a stanless steel water bottle. Not alluminum (for reasons we’ve discussed in earlier blogs), but stainless steel. Stop drinking out of plastic. Plastic trash is a serious threat to our environment both on land an in oceans. Without going in to too much detail, just know that plastic water bottles are the enemy of our environment. Go stainless steel and encourage others to do the same.

Recycle! Whether it’s used food containers, the morning paper, or a cfl lightbulb, recycle it! Especially if it’s plastic. Glass and paper are great to recycle, but it’s plastic and other chemical rich items that poses the most significant threat to our environment. Do your part and start recycling today. If you’re not sure if you can recycle something, call your town and ask, or just recycle it anyway (provided it’s not hazardous, if that’s the case, definitely call and ask).

Earth Day is a powerful day and the most significant day of the year to raise awareness and spread the word about doing things to help our planet, and our wallets. Make the effort, and encourage others to make an effort too. There’s no problem too big for us to tackle, so let’s get started!
